As we move into the heart of summer, the church calendar may seem quiet—but this season is full of opportunity.
Ordinary Time is anything but ordinary.
It’s a time to grow deeper in faith. A time to slow down, reflect, and respond to God’s grace in everyday life. And right in the middle of it comes a moment that grabs the nation’s attention—Independence Day.
Independence Day and the Gift of Freedom
The Fourth of July is often filled with fireworks, parades, cookouts, and family. It’s a time to celebrate the freedom we enjoy in this country. But beyond the flags and fun, this day invites a deeper look at what freedom really means.
In Galatians 5:1, the Apostle Paul says:
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
Paul isn’t talking about political liberty. He’s pointing to something greater—spiritual freedom.
What Is Spiritual Freedom?
Spiritual freedom means being released from the weight of sin, shame, fear, and death.
It means living fully into who God made you to be—holy, brave, and deeply loved.
In Christ, we’re not just free to do whatever we want. We’re free to live with purpose. We’re free to love boldly. We’re free to serve others in grace.
A World in Tension
But let’s be honest: freedom feels fragile right now.
There’s pain in the headlines—conflict, division, loneliness, and economic worry.
It feels like the world is fraying at the edges. It can leave us tired, confused, and even afraid.
This is when we remember something important:
“Our citizenship is in heaven.” — Philippians 3:20
We live in this country, yes. And we love it. But our highest loyalty is to the Kingdom of God. And that Kingdom doesn’t change. It’s built on justice, mercy, truth, and love.
What Is God Saying to Us This July?
In the middle of summer, in the middle of uncertainty, God still speaks. Here’s what I believe He’s saying:
- Don’t lose heart. The light of Christ still shines. And the darkness cannot overcome it. (John 1:5)
- Live your freedom well. Don’t use it selfishly. Use it to love and serve others. (Galatians 5:13)
- Be a peacemaker. In a divided time, be someone who brings unity and healing. (Matthew 5:9)
- Keep going. This season isn’t wasted. God often works most deeply during quiet times.
Living Out Our Faith This Summer
At First Church, we believe the Spirit of God is still moving. Even in July. Even in Ordinary Time.
So let’s keep showing up for each other.
Let’s keep praying for our world.
Let’s keep living out our faith, not only with words, but in love and service.
And let’s remember: true freedom—the kind that lasts—is found in Christ.
Grace and peace. And Happy 4th of July.
